How to pick a phone case as a gift
A phone case looks like an easy gift until you are standing in front of a few hundred designs with no idea what phone they own. The good news is that it breaks down into three small decisions, and each one has a quiet way to get it right. This is the method we would use ourselves.
Updated 2026-10-17 ¡ Every case $24.99 ¡ free US shipping ¡ free 30-day returns
Step one: find out exactly which phone they have
This is the only part you cannot guess. A case for the wrong model simply does not fit, and models from the same year can differ by a few millimetres around the camera. You need the brand, the model and the size: for example an iPhone 16 Pro Max, not just an iPhone.
- Look at a photo they have posted where the phone is visible. The camera layout usually gives the model away, and the lens count separates the Pro models from the standard ones.
- Ask someone who lives with them, or a sibling. People rarely remember the conversation.
- Bring phones up casually. Asking whether their camera is any good at night tends to get the full model name in reply.
- If you really cannot find out, send a digital gift card and let them pick the design and the model themselves.
If you do get it wrong, returns are free within 30 days, so the cost of a mistake is a little time rather than money.
Step two: read their taste from what they already chose
The best evidence of what someone likes is what they bought for themselves. Spend two minutes on this before you browse, because it changes which part of the catalog you should look at.
- Their current case or phone wallpaper. If it is plain black, lean toward calm designs. If it is already loud, you have permission to go bold.
- Their clothes and bag. Someone who wears mostly neutrals will usually like a soft palette with one colour accent.
- Their walls. Botanical prints point to florals, posters of mountains or national parks point to landscapes, and anyone with a cat calendar is easy.
- Their camera roll on social media. Lots of sunsets, sea and hiking suggests a landscape; lots of pets suggests an animal design.
Step three: choose one strong design, not a safe blur
A gift case works best when the design reads clearly from arm's length. One subject on a clean background, such as a single jellyfish, a branch of blossom or one mountain peak, looks more considered than a busy pattern. When you are torn between two, pick the one you could describe in three words.

Our catalog is broad, so the fastest way to get to that one design is to filter. On the homepage you can search and tap filters for style, colour and phone, and the results narrow as you go. The gift finder does the same thing with three questions.
A quick decision table
- They like plants, soft colour or anything pretty: start with florals such as cherry blossom, peonies or lavender.
- They have a pet or love wildlife: start with animals such as the snowy owl, the red panda or the glowing jellyfish.
- They hike, travel or post sunsets: start with landscapes such as misty peaks and quiet valleys.
- They like things loud: start with stained-glass animals and bold colour.
- No idea at all: a calm design in one colour family is the safest bet.
